Introduction
Did you know that there are over 5.30 billion active
internet users?
That is 65.7% of the world's population!
And this figure increases on average 8.2% every single
year…
With that in mind, I am going to talk to you about why it is
so important for businesses to have a strong online presence and how to utilise
this presence to connect with customers.
Access to the Internet
So, lets talk about access to
the internet over the years.
Since the introduction of the internet around the 1960’s and
the introduction of the World Wide Web to the public in the 1990’s, Internet
access has consistently grown year on year.
The introduction of the World Wide Web made the internet
more appealing to people as they could visit websites for entertainment,
communication and for learning. It was a new and exciting way to access
information.
Digital
Devices used by audiences
But how
do people access the internet?
Think about how many digital devices you can use to access
the internet today. Mobile phones, tablets, laptops and even your TV. Over the
years digital devices have been developed to include the use of the internet.
In 2023 ‘the most popular is the mobile phone. 95.8%
of people who access the internet use a mobile phone.’
How
customers search for information
How do
customers to they search for the information they need?
Customers use search engines to carry out research, to shop
and for entertainment and Google is the most used search engine worldwide and
have consistently held the highest market share over the past 10 years.
According to think with Google ‘53%
of shoppers say they always do research before they buy to ensure
they are making the best possible choice.’
Now customers have access to a lot of information before
making a purchase, which is why it is so important for companies to have a
strong and positive online presence.
When you think that over 50% of potential customers do online research before buying, it is crucial for a company to have a strong online presence. Without this, a company may miss out on potential sales.
What
consumers buy online
If
people are using the internet to shop, what are they buying?
According to data from ‘dodropshipping.com’ the top 5
products that are most sold online in 2023 are…
- Apparel
- Electronics
- Footwear
- Pet
Care
- Toys
In a fast-pace modern world a lot
of people do not want the hassle of going to a physical shop and therefore opt
for online shopping. Many online stores
offer coupons and discounts to use online which means a customer can get a
product for cheaper than if they were to go into a physical store.
However, online shopping also
introduces a challenge to businesses as more people want to buy online it has
resulted in a reduced footfall in physical stores which has led to store
closures. But how can a company benefit from an online shopping presence? When
a customer buys an item online a business can capture marketing information (if
the customer allows them to).
They can use the data captured
online to shape future marketing campaigns.
Online video consumption
In recent years video consumption has amplified
thanks to how easily accessible it is.
Websites like YouTube and apps like TikTok
attract millions of active users every single day, so why wouldn’t companies
use these outlets to advertise and promote their products and services?
Most people watch videos online
for entertainment purposes.
Others use videos to learn, for
example how to fix a leaky radiator without paying a handy person to fix it.
Video content is easy to access but it also allows the viewer to easily digest the information. Why would you read an hour-long article when it can be fed to you in a 1-minute fun video that is quick and easy to access?
Consumer trends
So, what is the future of the internet? Lets
look at the top three trends.
1.
Consumers are more connected
Consumers are more connected with
business, products and services than ever before.
Customers can now use their
devices to research products, to ask questions, look at reviews at any time via
various channels.
With this it brings businesses
the opportunity to connect with these potential customers. They can do this
through a strong online presence through their website and other online
channels.
2.
Consumers use more devices
Consumers don't use a single device
throughout the buyer's journey. According to a Google report, 90% of
consumers use more than one device to accomplish a single task online. A
shopper looking to purchase a product might start the journey after seeing an
advertisement on television and research products using their smartphone. After
evaluating different products, they might use their laptop to check pricing and
complete the purchase.
3.
Consumers have higher expectations
Consumers' expectations are at an
all-time high as a result of the influence of technology.
With digital pioneers continually
raising the bar, your customers compare the experience of buying from you to
your competitors. Consumers expect more
responsive, relevant, and targeted communication from the companies they buy
from.
Summary
To summarize, to stay relevant in ever-growing
online world businesses need to invest heavily in their online presence.
The data shows that internet users and the
devices they use are continuously increasing therefore businesses need to
utilize the internet to connect with this growing community of online users.
The internet and its use is everchanging and
businesses need to keep up with consumer trends to ensure their business
continues to succeed and grow.
